Third year, thirty-handicap, hacker gets “Hole in One” with the “Luck of the Irish”. During play in The Railroad League. The hole: 158-yard par three with a pin placement that was at the back right of the green. Just in front of the green on the right side there is a bunker that was in the line from the elevated tee to pin. The plan: Using a five iron because I am not a hard hitter. The ball was teed high to give more loft, so to drop the ball on the green with less run. When I hit the ball it started right and with a slight draw it headed toward the pin. The ball hit just beyond the bunker on the first cut. The thrill: The ball took a nice bounce and rolled about 10 feet into the hole. Although, I had the concept to get the ball near the pin, I still cannot believe that it happened. By the way, I cannot intentionally draw the ball. |

John Merritt Kolesar Address: St. Andrews at Valleybrook 2302 Doral Drive Blackwood , 08012 Golf Course: Back Creek Golf Club Middletown DE Hole #: 8th Distance: 156 Yards Club Used: Taylor-Made 6 Iron Date of Shot: 25-Aug-2001 Comments: As per a telephone conversation interview with United Sates Amateur Golf Association, and Maximum Golf Magazine… Eighth hole, pin in the middle, blocked by eight foot to ten foot dune, sand trap in front, sea grass on top, wind in the face; the green was sloped to the right 156 yards from the tips, flag visible, hole blocked. High lofted iron shot hit on slight hill to the left of the green. Hit and rolled behind the dune. Picture perfect shot. My three partners in my foursome also hit perfect shots. When we got down to the green three balls were on the green all within two to three feet of the hole. One ball was missing. We checked the balls and found mine was missing. Since the green had a heavy slope left to right I assumed my ball had rolled off. Searched the high fringe on the right side of the green. No Ball! Decided since I had hit such a perfect shot it must be in the hole. (sarcasm) Walked over to the pin looked into hole. Staring up at me was a titleist with two red circles facing up, my inscripted markings on all of my balls which lets me know always that I am the “oo” in cool; dubbed by my grandson Patrick years ago. (Patrick claims that there are only two great golfers in the world, Freddy Couples and of course, you grandpa.) This was the greatest lucky shot I’ve ever had. This shot was witnessed by, my partner Jim Garrett, my best friend Mike Balliet, and his son Sean Balliet. Now that I know how to do it I’m looking forward to my next hole in one. Although, I feel the tradition should be changed… The person who gets the hole in one should receive and not have to pay in the clubhouse. |
